Do you need a docs platform at all?
If your documentation already lives as markdown files, the cheapest GitBook alternative
is publishing those files as they are. Read on 2026-10-20, GitBook's pricing page lists
Free with one user and no custom domain, Essential at $65 per site a month plus
$12 per user, and Ultimate at $249 per site plus $12 per user, billed annually.
Your agent can hand a markdown folder to Birta: index.md becomes the start page,
links between files and to headings work, every publish is a version, and readers leave
remarks on the page without an account. Nothing is rewritten into another format.
One prompt: publish the folder you already have
Paste this into Claude, ChatGPT or Codex with Birta connected, or into the chat in Birta's panel with the folder attached as a zip.
Publish this documentation folder as a site on Birta. Keep the files as
markdown, do not convert them to HTML. Make index.md the start page; if there
is no index.md, write one that links to every page in a sensible order. Check
that relative links between .md files and links to headings resolve, and list
any that do not. Then publish and give me the live link. Then compare. Open the link next to your GitBook space and look at what a reader actually uses. If the answer is the pages and the links, you have the alternative. The prompts for review rounds and client remarks are in AI website prompts.
What the folder gets on Birta
- A page per file. Each
.mdfile opens as a readable page at its own address;index.mdis the front door. - Versions and rollback. Every publish keeps the previous state, and each version has its own review link, so a reviewer comments on exactly what you sent.
- Remarks without an account. A colleague or client pins a comment to a passage. Your agent reads the threads, fixes the source files and publishes the next version.
- Your domain on Free, and a password on the site when the agent sets one.
Two limits sit next to these: HTML inside markdown, Mermaid diagrams and frontmatter do not render yet, so a page that depends on them shows the raw text. Birta's free plan keeps its mark on the page; removing it is the Team plan.
When GitBook, or a docs generator, is the right call
- Readers search the docs, or ask an AI assistant built into them.
- You publish API reference generated from an OpenAPI file.
- Writers who do not use Git edit the docs in a shared editor.
- You need a sidebar tree, version switcher or multiple languages built from config.
- The docs need a server, a database or reader accounts behind them. Birta publishes static pages.
GitBook's own Free plan includes Git Sync with GitHub and GitLab, so your content can already stay as markdown in your repository. What Free lacks is your domain and more than one editor. That is a fair setup for a small open-source project; the Reddit thread ranking for this query is titled "GitBook's new pricing killed it" for the teams that need more.
The honest alternatives
Unranked, because the job decides. Prices are left to each vendor's page.
| Instead of GitBook | What it is for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| mdBook | A book-style site from a folder of markdown, built with Rust | Open source, fast, search included; you host the output, often on GitHub Pages |
| Docusaurus | Docs, blog and versioned docs for a product, built with React | Open source from Meta; the standard choice when docs live in the code repository |
| MkDocs (with Material for MkDocs) | A docs site from markdown with a YAML config | Open source, Python; Material adds search, tabs and a polished theme |
| GitHub Pages | Free hosting for the output of any of the three | Review happens on the source in a pull request, not on the page |
| Helpjuice, Nuclino, BunnyDesk | Knowledge bases and wikis edited in the browser | Closer to GitBook's editor than to a markdown folder |
| display.dev | HTML and markdown shared to a URL only your company can open | Sign-in for every viewer; positioned on GitBook without the format rewrite |
| Your agent plus Birta | A markdown folder published as pages, with versions and remarks | No search, no docs editor, no API reference. That is the trade |
The three generators need a build and a host, and in return give you search and navigation from config. Birta needs neither and gives you review on the published page. If both matter, build with MkDocs or Docusaurus and keep Birta for the drafts you send out for remarks.
Publish your markdown docs as they are
Attach the folder in Birta's chat and its agent publishes it with a review link. Or connect the agent you already use.
